This book by Traci Hunter Abramson was amazing. Below is a description of the book.

This book kept me on the edge of my seat and it was difficult to put it aside at bedtime or when I had other things to do. I just wanted to keep reading. It is well written and has plenty of mystery as well as romance. I would give this a high rating and encourage my friends to read it. You will be glad you did.

Joyful Noise

Last night I attended a premiere showing to a movie that will be in the theaters on Friday, January 13, Joyful Noise. I loved this movie so much I could probably see it over and over. I’ve never written a movie review before. The reviews I write are usually about books.

Following are the details that I found on line about this movie. It takes place in a small town in Georgia. The people there have fallen on hard times. They are counting on the Divinity Church Choir to lift their spirits by winning the National Joyful Noise Competition.

The choir has always known how to sing in harmony, but the discord between its two leading ladies threatens to tear them apart. Their newly appointed director, Vi Rose Hill (Queen Latifah), stubbornly wants to stick with their tried-and-true traditional style, while the fiery G.G. Sparrow (Dolly Parton) thinks tried-and-true translates to tired-and-old and her rebellious grandson, Randy (Jeremy Jordan) really shakes things up. He has a good ear for music, but he also has an eye for Vi Rose’s beautiful and talented daughter, Olivia (Keke Palmer). Sparks between the two teenagers cause even more friction between G.G. and Vi Rose.

The musically driven story also brings together the sounds of gospel, pop, country, rock and R & B with memorable songs, performed by the cast. If you love listening to music, you will love this movie. If not, I suggest you stay home.

I loved the movie and was glad that I had attended a prior showing. I can't think of anyone who wouldn't like this movie - unless you don't like music, you don't like Dolly Parton, Queen Latifah, Keke Palmer, or Jeremy Jordan. Or maybe if you don't like watching a movie because you would rather stay home and watch television. There is plenty of action, lots of humor, and it is a fun movie.

HELP - Call For Stories

My friend JoLyn Brown has asked me to post something about this for her on my blog. She is doing a book called, A Circle of Sisters. It is a collection of true stories about Relief Society women.

Every day, ordinary women who belong to the Relief Society Organization put their hands in the Lord's and go to work. These women rely on personal revelation to get them to the right place at the right time, and every day, miracles are happening. I know that you have seen these miracles in your own lives. I know they have changed you for the better.

Her goal is to create a collection of these stories. So often, we never hear about or see the good things that are happening all around us because of Relief Society sisters. Following are the guidelines.

1. Tell your story in first person. This will make it more personal. How did your experience change you for the better? Be sincere.

2. Keep your story between 500-1200 words.

3. Format using Times New Roman and 12 point font.

4. Please include a short biography, (50-80 words.)

5. Send your story and biography as a word document attachment to circleofsisters.submit@yahoo.com. Use the title of your story and your name in the subject line.

Please keep in mind that she will not be able to offer any payment for your stories, but this may be a chance for you to get publishing credits which is always great.

Don't Cry Wolf by Clair M. Poulson

This book captured me in the first chapter and kept me turning pages the entire time. It called me away from other activities because I had to know what was going to happen next.

The back cover gives a hint of what is to come when it tells everyone that Deputy Prescott gets a call directing him to an accident. As he approaches the twisted, mangled remains of the vehicle, he doubts there could be any survivors in that wreckage. Somebody's life would be ruined tonight, he just never thought it would be his.

Overwhelmed by the memory of losing part of his family, he decides to take the sheriff's offer to become a detective instead of continuing to patrol.

A year later, wolves are starting to drift from neighboring Yellowstone Park to Montana ranches and are preying on calves, and a group of activists is passionate about saving the wolves from getting shot by ranchers. Their passion turns to violence with the murder of a rancher who shoots a wolf in order to protect his livestock. It is up to Deputy Prescott to find out exactly who is behind the escalating violence.

The book is filled with suspense, and romance. It's a book that I'm glad I read.

Christmas Carole Sing-Along

Last night my friend Janis invited me to attend a sing-along at the Engergy Solutions Arena in Salt Lake with her and her husband. Although the program says it was the 27th annual performance, I had never heard about it before this invite.

The Larry H. Miller Family do this every year. There is an orchestra led by Robert C. Bowden that plays Christmas music while the audience participates singing to words that are posted above. Besides the singing this year they featured Alex Boye'. That man has a wonderful powerful voice.

This is something I am going to put on my calendar for all future years. It was a short program lasting just over one hour but certainly put me into the Christmas Spirit. We sang all the versus to all the popular Christmas songs - some versus I had never heard before.

Oh, and I forgot to mention that Santa Claus was there for all the children to see as well as the Jazz bear, and Big Budah from Fox 13.

The Assassination of Governor Boggs, a Historical Novel by Rod Miller

This story takes place as detective Pogue, of the Pinkerton National Detective Agency steps into a hair-raising mystery and tracks down Governor Boggs’s enemies and friends to determine who really shot the past governor. He begins the story by telling us that Lilburn Boggs was never the same after getting shot in the head. News of the assassination spread quickly, but the news was premature because he lasted the night and nearly eighteen more years.

Rod Miller has written many essays, magazine articles, book reviews, and anthologized short stories, and poems. I can tell he did his research while writing this book and he didn’t leave any trail unturned. I learned more in this one book than I have heard in many years. Several years ago I read the biography of Porter Rockwell, by Richard Lloyd Dewey. From reading both books I have drawn my own conclusion and that is that Mr. Rockwell became the scapegoat of every mysterious incident that happened during his lifetime.

I love the personal part of the story with detective Progue buying small horses on his travels through the west for his young daughter’s collection. He was a likeable guy, not in a hurry, but thorough in his questioning. He also didn’t seem to be influenced by other’s opinions.

I enjoyed the descriptions of the rhythmic clack and hum of wheels on the rails and the abandoned town of Nauvoo. Because of the many images Rod painted it put me right into the story. He also has the ability to help me see the individuals in the story as he talks about the tousled hair, and a gaunt whiskered face. The trip into the Salt Lake valley seemed real as he was jostled over the mountains and plains, lurched up an incline, chocked by Red Desert dust, and the bone-jarring ride down Echo Canyon. I appreciate the fact that Miller found documents that I had never read before, such as the extermination order given by Governor Boggs.

Brigham Young states that in his his opinion Rockwell's innocence is "a certainty- if only, for no other reason, that Boggs survived. Had Port fired the shot, that would not have been the case."

I always love books that include in the back discussion questions. I know that this helps book clubs in their debates about the book. I can tell that Rod really thought through these questions. He doesn’t give us the answer but instead gives us something to think about. I particularly love the last question Do you think Porter Rockwell did it?

I am sure that anyone interested in history during this time period would love this book. I did.

Nourish & Strengthen by Maria Hoagland

After Chloe Taylor is called as the Primary president, she discovers that managing the highs and lows of the chronic illness of diabetes may be easier than the ups and downs associated with family, friends, and church callings.

The next time Chloe went walking with her friends instead of running ahead as usual she chose to walk with them. Instead of dwelling on her own problems, she listened to what her friends were saying about their own trials as well as what they were saying to lift one another. Before then, Chloe had failed to recognize the issues that her friends were facing. She was ashamed when she realized how selfish and judgmental she had been over the past year. Chloe realized that she was only thinking of herself and how much she had to get done.

It was enjoyable to realize that other people have as much difficulty as I did in trying to run a ward church organization. It must be a common thing to have people not show up to teach, or to fall short on some of the assignments given to them. That can certainly be a difficult position to be in when you are a president.

This is definitely a good book for anyone that is struggling with diabetes. For those of us that don’t have that problem it seemed a little too much of the book was focused on that one issue. Maria, however, is a great writer. The story line was good and most of the time it kept my attention. Every reader takes something different away from each book they read. I think the lesson I most enjoyed in this book is that the outer appearances are far less important than inner peace and spiritual strength.

There were a couple of things I was glad Maria included in her book. One thing that is excellent for book clubs is the Discussion Questions. The other thing is the Glossary of LDS Terms. Both of these are helpful to those reading the book.

I am sure that many of you would love this book, so I am going to give you all a chance to own and read one of your own. I am going to hold a contest. I have not done this for a long time, but am hoping that this will get me back to writing on my blog regularly. Book Review of The Sapphire Flute

The characters in The Sapphire Flute written by Karen E Hoover, were described perfectly. I knew and cared about what happened to Ember and Kayla. It was great reading a book with female characters.

I would encourage all young fantasy readers to read this book. There is plenty of unpredictable action as Ember discovers she can see magic and change the appearance of things at will, and Kayla is given a great responsibility to have guardianship of an instrument of magic, the Sapphire Flute.

I’m sure that once you read the “The Sapphire Flute” that you will be as anxious as I am to read the 2nd book in the Wolf Child Saga, “The Armor of Light”. Will Kayla find the birthplace of the flute? Will Ember be able to discover her father’s secret?

A Book Review

Late Saturday evening I posted this book review but by Sunday it disappeared. I'm going to try doing this again.

All That Was Promised by Vickie Hall was an easy read for me. I loved this book from the very first page.

The story starts out with a Mormon missionary, Ben Lachlan, preaching to Richard Kenyon, a Methodist minister, who soon finds himself questioning his lifes work. His wife isn't sure she wants her husband to go down this new path.

I could tell that Vickie did lots of research. I have been to Cardiff and in reading this book it brought back many scenes I remembered from my visit. All of her characters came to life and seemed like real people to me.

This book is full of lots of action, mystery, and love stories. The persecution the early saints in Wales had to endure when they joined this new church is amazing. I'm sure it would test anyone almost more than one can imagine. Every chapter had a new challenge. I love historical fiction and this book was no exception. I had a hard time putting it aside and wanted to read even when I was supposed to be working. The only disappointing thing for me was that it ended. I wanted it to continue.

50 YEARS

50 years ago today Jack and I went to the Manti Temple to get married. The first pictures is of the many peopole who came to our wedding at the temple.

Jack was really looking forward to this 50 year anniversary. I knew he was too ill to last another 6 weeks. Even with him not here any longer, I know this was a great accomplishment.

Z = ZERO

At the beginning of April I figured there was probably a zero chance that I would complete the challenge to write everyday except on Sunday. I was late a couple of days, which meant I had to play catch up. But I did reach this goal.

I'm hoping that now I will continue to write frequently on this blog. I have lots of things to say, and lots of pictures to post.

NEVER UNDER ESTIMATE YOURSELF - even when you think there is no chance in the world = a zero chance. You can really do it.

YOUNG

I am young when it comes to writing. I don’t have much experience in that area, and I haven't had lots of time to develop that part of my life. I didn't even consider writing regularly until ALL my children were grown and gone from the nest.

As you can see by the sidebar I do have a book published and several stories in another book. My two book signings went very well, and my book did win a Golden Quill award last year. To me that proves you are never too old to try something new.

In other aspects of my life I’m much older. Do I regret not trying my hand at writing much earlier? YES!

If you want to write - DO IT. It doesn't matter if the children are still at your knees. It doesn't matter if life is crazy. If you don't do it now, you will always regret that decision.

In my dictionary there isn't even one page of words that start with the letter X. There re only three words that I'm familiar with.

X-Ray which we all know is a bunch of pictures of different parts of our body.

Xylophone is an instrument with several mounted rows of wooden bars played with two small mallets. The music it makes is beautiful.

And finally, a Xerox machine that some of the younger people have no idea what this is, but I worked one of these machines many times. I much prefer the nice printers that hook up to our computers. Less mess, less work, and not near as noisy.

I realy don't have much to say about any of these things that start with the letter X.

W = WITCH

Witches have always fascinated me. I know the dictionary says they are women thought to have evil magic powers. I agree with the magic powers, but I'm not convinced they were evil women. We always think of them as wearing a black cloak, a pointed hat, and as the first pictures shows they fly on a broomstick. In the second picture it gives me, a writer, a chance to let my imagination run wild. Usually at Halloween my costume of choice has usually been a witch. I still like to dress up and pretend.

One of my favorite places that I visted on a vacation was at Salem where I strolled the halls of the witches museum. When I returned home I told my three red-headed granddaughters that if they had lived in Salen during 1692 they would have been considered a witch.

A few years later I was in Colonial Williamsburg, VA and sat on the jury for the witch trial. If you have never been to Salem or Williamsburg and are curious about the witches you should visit these two places.

VACATION

I have always loved to travel. There is nothing better than to see the beautiful creations that God made. I've travelled from the midwest part of the United States to the south, west, north, and east. Each state has something unique and special. I really could never say what I liked best. Mountains are great, but so is the desert.

I like flying in a plane, but I also like driving. It's also lots of fun to cruise, or go by train. I'm not sure I would have liked travelling by wagon train, but maybe it would have been fun.

I've still got lots of places to visit. One year I took a three week vacation to Scotland, England and Wales, and could have stayed at least another three weeks. There were still so many places I wanted to see.

One thing wrong with vacations is, THEY ARE NEVER LONG ENOUGH.

This picture is the one I like because of all the color. Here is what the definition reads - it is a legendary animal commonly portrayed as a white horse with a goat's beard and a large, pointed, spiraling horn projecting from its forehead. I also found other definition, but the one I liked best said it is a symbol of purity and grace. I have always loved these beautiful, graceful animals. Several years ago, my daughter painted a unicorn scene for me. I have a picture somewhere, but can't find it right now.

Above my computer I have a beautiful picture. You are looking at the backs of three children and a dog. They are looking out over a lake and in the clouds above is a huge moutain with a castle, a rainbow and two unicorns. The heading below the picture reads, “It’s sad when we give up the castles of our future for the fantasies of our todays.”

What kind of thoughts run through your head when you read that statement?

Snow/Spring

Haven't we all had about enough snow for one year? I have.

Don't get me wrong, I love the snow. I love playing in it, and I love shoveling it. There is nothing more beautiful or peaceful than looking out at your entire yard and neighborhood covered with white snow. If I could stay home I wouldn't care if it snowed every day, but I hate driving my car in the snow because the roads are always icy.

Besides the snow I also love the spring time. I'm excited for the flowers to start blooming. With them comes the fragrance. Also the birds come and I could spend hours watching them fly from tree to tree or into the many birdhouses in my yard. My husband loved to build and paint bird houses, so we have many of them.

Reliable

Yesterdays word was to be reliable. I guess that's a strange word since I'm a poor example of reliability. I admire and look up to the people that I can rely on. It's great to know that if someone says they will do something, it will happen.

I guess here I encourage everyone to try to be more reliable and follow through on the things you say you will do.

QUEEN

I love to read stories about queens - some are good and others are wicked. It's fun to imagine myself as a queen. Of course, I'd be very beautiful, and since I’m a good person, I would be the kind of queen that everyone loves. I would rule my kingdom with kindness. I would dress in a gorgeous gown, and eat the most delicious meals. I'm not sure how I would deal with people waiting on me and helping me because I like to do things for myself. If I saw someone being mistreated, I would step right in and fix the problem. Maybe queens don't get to do that sort of thing. Maybe I had just better stick to being myself - just plain ol me.

P = Pirate/Princess

There is no way in the world I can choose which of these two I like best.

How can you even choose your favorite when you read through the princess book?

Reading about famous pirates in history is about the most exciting type of story I can read. I particulary enjoyed learning about the female pirates, Mary Read and Anne Bonny. Wow, they were a couple of cool ladies.

So, do you like to read about a princess or would you rather read a pirate story?

Obstacles

Life is full of obstacles. There is always a new hurdle to jump, a problem to solve, and something difficult around every corner. As a writer the more of these obstacles we include in our books the better the story. I try to include complications in every chapter. The best stories are those with new surprises jumping out at you when you least expect them. Keep your stories true to life, with lots of obstacles. Life isn't easy and it should be difficult for your characters.

Nightmare

To me a nightmare is a bad dream that causes fear. Sometimes my dream contains danger. If it is a stressful dream I usually have trouble returning to sleep. As a child sometimes this feeling lasted for a long period of time. I don't have a nighmare very often, but when I do it takes me a long time to trust willing going to sleep. I would rather stay awake and look into the dark to make sure nothing bad is going to happen.

MAGICAL

My favorite word that starts with M is magical. With some of the words I've chosen this month already I'm sure you all know that I love to write about mysterious and magical things. Most of the books I read also have enchanting and captivating things happening. I really don't live in a fairytale world, but I sure dream and imagine what it would be like.

L = LEPRECHAUN

The definition that I found about a leprechaun is they are a type of fairy in Irish folklore, usually taking the form of an old man, clad in a red or green coat, who enjoys partaking in mischief. Usually they are about the size of a small child, with a beard and hat.

I’ve heard many stories about them making shoes, or their pot of gold at the end of the rainbow, but the story I like best is that if you ever capture them they have magical power to grant you three wishes. That is if you release them. I’m not sure that I would ever trust one of these cute little creatures.

Kindness

When I thought about the letter K, the first word that entered my mind was kindness. It is one of the most important actions in this world. Wouldn't earth life be so much better if everyone was kind to one another?

On the other hand, I really have a lot of work to do. Yes, I'm usually kind, and it's something I don't usually have to think about, but there are times I have to remind myself to be kind. If you get me angry, I'm not very kind. By nature I'm a caring, nice, gentle, thoughtful, compassionate, and considerate person. Most days I usually don't have to think about those actions. They are just automatic to me. Now, I just need to remind myself to always act with kindness toward others.

Jack was the youngest of nine children.

We were married on May 2, 1961 in the Manti Temple. Yes, this coming May we will have been married for 50 years. That is why the first thing that comes to my mind when I think of the letter J is Jack. He has been a part of my life for a long time.

I = Imagination

One good thing about imagination is I can believe I wasn't late with yesterday's post and think it's still Monday. A writer needs a good imagination. Sometimes you may be laughed at, especially when you are trying to imagine something while other people are around. Without a good imagination there are many of my stories that would never have been written. It's great going to that little part of your brain and being able to conjure up what ever you want. Your characters can be whatever you want them to be, and they can live anywhere in this world or another world.

Peasant Queen Book Reveiw

I recently completed reading, The Peasant Queen, by Cheri Chesley. I enjoyed the book which begins with the tale of a simple farm girl who runs away from home. There is plenty of magic in the book and lots of action. As in all good stories there is also romance, but lots of twists and turns along the way.

This is a book that I would recommend to readers of all ages. It will keep you turning pages and sitting on the edge of your seat to see what will happen next.

Historical

Give me anything historical and I'm happy. I write historical fiction, and I read historical fiction. As I drive back and forth to work I listen to historical books on tape. Some of them are fiction and some are facts.

I love museums where you can stroll for hours looking at things from the past. I don't think that means I live in the past, it just means that I treasure things from long ago.

I have a great appreciation for my ancestors and the things they did to get me to where I am. I will always honor those who came on the Mayflower, as well as those who went to Virginia. The Hugenots have always fascinated me and I will always appreciate those ancestors who came here for the freedom to worship. Of course, that means I also appreciate the Mormon pioneers who sacrificed a lot to come to the valley I now live in.I often wonder if I would have had the courage my ancestors did. They all gave up so much so that I could live in a free country.

GHOST

The story I just finished writing and now I'm in the editing process has a girl ghost. I’ve always been fascinated by the very existence of ghosts, and yes, I do believe in them. Not in a frightened sort of way, but as a being that is helpful and has a reason for still being locked into an earth life. I don’t think they are evil, but are troubled and don’t mean to frighten anyone.

It’s up to you – you can believe me or think I’m crazy. Either way is okay with me. I just wish I had a picture of one. Then you'd believe me.

F = FAIRIES

Elf

The first thing I thought about when thinking about the letter E was an elf. As a writer I've always been fascinated by elves. My elves are mysterious. What do your elves look like?

My elves have a short body and large expressive eyes, pointed ears, golden colored hair and high cheekbone. They are rarely seen by people. If you can see them they appear only at certain times and at special places such as around trees, in forests, in mountains or by waterfalls. Some of them even live in underground caves.

My elves are peaceful and they love nature as well as music. They are calm, and patient, but they are also strong and have lots of endurance especially against magical influences. The older they get the wiser they are.

Daydreams

I know there are many daydreamers out there. For me it's a time for happy, pleasant thoughts. As a writer I often find myself spacing out. Sometimes I review past memories, or I imagine my characters in different settings. When I'm doing this I don't consider myself lazy. Instead, I'm being constructive. I am developing new ideas for my next book. Of course, people who are not writers don't understand this, but without time to daydream many of my books would never even have a first page.

C = Castles

Until my trip to Scotland, England and Wales in 2006 with my sister, I had only seen pictures of castles. The first castle ruin we visited in Scotland was Dumbarton that dated back to 450 A.D. We then took a ferry to the Isle of Butte and saw the ruins of the Rothesay Castle built about 1098. The following day we went to the huge Edinburgh Castle.

After Scotland we went to England. The first castle we visited was the stunning medieval Alnwick castle (the film location for the Harry Potter movies).

One of the most memorable nights during our trip was spent staying overnight at the castle in Durham.

The following day we went to the 14th century Raby Medieval Castle, and the ruins of the Bernard Castle. Another beautiful castle we visited was in Nottingham. We then went to see the Keniworth castle ruins in Warkwickshire.

My favorite castle was the one in Warwick founded in 1068. That day besides touring the castle, we experienced many things. We saw the world’s largest siege machine – Trebuchet. We went on a ghost tour, watched knights on horses, and a jousting match with knights and squires. We also attended the King Maker’s feast in the evening.

The next castle we saw was in Wales. The first one was the Chepstow castle ruins, and then we went to the Cardiff Castle.

Back in England we went to the Farleigh-Hungerford Castle ruins, and then we went to the Winchester Castle built in 1067. This castle holds the famous King Arthur’s Round Table. In the same village was the Wolvesey Castle ruin.

You probably think all we did was visit castle, but I actually have more pictures of churches and cathedrals. We also visited areas where our ancestors were from. It was a wonderful three weeks of exploring.

Brain

This A – Z challenge isn’t so easy. It’s only the second day and I’m already having trouble. The only thing that is coming to my mind right now that starts with a B is brain. Maybe it’s because this has been on my mind a lot.

About the time my husband started getting really sick; my son was diagnosed with a slow growing brain tumor that was activated by a car accident last August. He had surgery and had it removed in November. The things I’ve seen him struggle with are amazing. (Wow, that’s the word I used yesterday.

My son’s occupation is computer programmer. The first problem he noticed after surgery was he had trouble with number sequences. Next he had problems with multitasking. I can’t even imagine what life would be like if I wasn’t able to do more than one thing at a time. He hasn’t let either of these difficulties stop him. I can’t believe the strength he has to take everything one step at a time. The great thing is he is doing it. He is going forward with each obstacle that comes his way. His determination is great. The exercises they give him in therapy are difficult and some of them I can’t do. He has become a strong man because of all these challenges. Yes, he has changed, but it is for his good.

Amazing

I decided that it was about time I got back to writing my blog, and decided to take the Alex J. Cavanaugh A-Z blogfest challenge.

Since today is Friday, April 1st I need to use the letter A. In grade school we always said that A = apple. However I'm not going to use that word.

The main reason I've been away from my blog for so long is I had been taking care of my husband. He passed away on March 15, so now I need to get back to one of the things I love most, and that is writing.

I have discovered in the past 15 days how amazing people are. I have been showered with love from all directions - people in my church, my writing friends, neighbors, my high school buddies, and relatives. My house has been overflowing with food, and with flowers. It's wonderful to be surrounded by so many caring and marvelous people.

People are incredible, and amazing.

Chocolate Roses

This great book is written by Joan Sowards, and I would recommend it to ALL my friends. The back cover reads – Janie Rose Whitaker’s world revolved around her chocolate shop until Roger Wentworth and his young daughter moved into the apartment across from Janie’s. Anyone would think Roger fit the mold of the “perfect” guy, but soon Janie discovers secrets that could keep them apart forever. Though she resists getting involved in Roger’s complicated life, they are drawn further into a bittersweet relationship.

I love the suspense Joan twisted into this story. Besides lots of mystery, there was also plenty of romance. I found myself laughing, crying, and wanting to know what would happen next. Sometimes I couldn’t turn the pages fast enough and some nights I found myself fighting to stay awake so that I could find out what was happening next.

I’ll warn you ahead of time to pay strict attention to everything you read, or you’ll find yourself hunting for the answers at the end because Joan includes a quiz at the end of her book.

Just reading that much, made me want to read the enitre book. From the very first exciting paragraph until the very end the book was full of suspense. The longer I read, the more I found it difficult to turn the pages fast enough.

This was a well-written, magical story. I loved the captivating settings, suspense, and all the twists and turns along the way. The romance and mystery kept me guessing until the very end. I’m glad that I read this book and look forward to reading more by Ronda in the near future.

Erie Canal Cruise

I have wanted and waited for the chance to take a ride on the Erie Canal. Yes - it was everything that I had expected. I loved going through the locks (gates) - watching the water raise and then later in the trip watching as our boat got lower in the water. I took over 40 pictures and it was hard deciding which ones I should share.

On July 10th, my daughter Brenda and I flew into New York so we could attend the Palmyra Pageant that evening. Prior to the performance, Book of Mormon characters roamed the audience, handing out Book of Mormons and visiting with the people. As you can tell, I took many pictures.

For those of you who haven’t heard about this book on the back jacket is says: This collection of humorous anecdotes from celebrated LDS authors shows off Church members at their finest. Now for the interview –
Q. What prompted you to write Mormon Mishaps and Mischief?

Cindy: The moon was full, Aquarius was on the cusp, and the chickens were molting, all of which combined to make this the right time for a book of humorous anecdotes. Well, that and the pantry was empty, so a book that might actually sell a few copies seemed like a good idea.

Nichole: What Cindy says might be true. Or it could be that one sunny spring morning, one of us woke up and said, “I think I’ll write a book of humorous anecdotes today.” Then there was email involved. Lots of email. And brainstorming and collecting and chocolate eating. And maybe some Twinkies. Thus, the proposal for a book of humorous anecdotes was born.

Q. What’s your favorite story in the book?

Cindy: There’s this fantastic story about a crotchety old man who gets visited by three ghosts at Christmas, and by the end of the story, he vows to keep Christmas … oh wait, that’s Charles Dickens’ stuff. All right then, my next favorite is “A Good Impression” contributed by Cathy Witbeck. It’s about a little girl who gets all decked out for Easter and puts something interesting into her purse to take to church. (But I’m not going to tell you what, because it would ruin the fun.) On the other hand, I do have to tell you that because they’re all so funny, my favorite story changes about every five minutes.

Nichole: I’m with Cindy. Choosing just one favorite would be like playing favorites between my children. Which I’ve never done. Ever. I’m a good mother. I promise. Oh, but speaking of motherhood, there are several stories about children doing funny things, like licking worms and bringing a head of lettuce to pray. Love all of those.

Q. Where do the stories come from?

Cindy: From the demented … er … I mean, the creative genius of our minds. And from the funny events that we, and our contributors, saw happening at church, home and everywhere in between. Rest assured, however, that all contributors to the book signed a statement that the stories were true, and so even though real names were seldom used in the anecdotes, the situations actually happened. Which means if you think you recognize your bishop in there, well … we’ll never tell.

Nichole: None of them came from my current ward. They all came from other people’s wards, which I visited while wearing my invisibility cloak. So if you happen to be in my ward and recognize a story or five or twenty, well I didn’t see those things or write them down in my handy-dandy notebook. Er. Um. I mean…I plea the fifth?

Monster Concert

Lately, I’ve been telling you about different book that I just read, but today I want to tell you about an amazing concert I attended on Saturday evening. It was the 2010 Monster Concert, held at the Libby Gardner Concert Hall at the University of Utah. I love all kinds of music and I’ve attended many concerts every year.

As soon as I walked in, I knew this was different from any concert I have ever attended before. On the stage were 13 pianos. Now picture this picture 12 more times. That's how many piano's there were.

Then I scanned the program. It wasn’t about Beethoven and Bach. Instead, it was music from the 70’s. The music I was going to hear was from The Beatles, The Beach Boys, Michael Jackson and Stevie Wonder. There was even disco music. One of my favorite songs played was Dancing Queen.

During some of the songs, every piano was in use. When they performed, After The Love Has Gone, they used only seven pianos with fourteen piano players, two at each piano. This concert only lasted a little over one hour, but I was enjoying it enough they could have gone on for many more hours.

With all the challenges going on in my personal life right now, this was a lifesaver for me. I needed a night to just relax and enjoy something worthwhile and uplifting. Too often, I fail to take the time to enjoy an evening listening to one of the better things in life, good, clean music.

I couldn't believe how quick I was able to read this book. I could not, and didn't want to put it down. Any woman who has ever suffered any type of abuse will like and relate to this book. Any woman who is in that type of situation should read this book. Maybe it will give you the courage to do what you must.

Jennie Hansen is a great story teller. This book is full of suspense and will keep you on the edge of your seat wondering what Blaine will do to Claire next. I felt sympathy for Darcey that she had to endure watching her best friend suffer so much. I was angry that Claire couldn't and wouldn't help herself until it was almost too late. I felt gratitude that my life is peaceful and not so full of trials.

If you are one of those lonely, isolated women who witnesses bruises, broken bones, and are fearful of someone hurting you, I encourage you to read this book. I'm sure it will give you hope and maybe the courage to improve your situation.

Dawn's Early Light

This book is the third volume in a series, Free Men and Dreamers, by L. C. Lewis. I can’t think of anyone better suited to write this book than someone born and raised in the historical setting of Washington D.C. and Baltimore where this entire series is set. I envy her being able to spend so much time in this part of our great country. Those of you that know me are aware of how much I love history and visiting the places where history was made.

Laurie made this part of history and the war of 1812 come to life. I fell in love with the main characters immediately, and I cheered when Jed freed the slaves living on his plantation. This story made me wish that I could have been there fighting alongside those living at the Willows when Sebastian Dupree attacked their home. I have visited Washington D.C. several times, and I have read the stories about the British burning our nation’s capital during this era. Al though, I knew the story, I still cried when Laurie made this part of history real with her descriptions of destruction.

Laurie had a way of making me truly experience the pain and passion of the American’s, the slaves, and the British as they endured that week in American history when Washington burned. Anyone that enjoys reading historical fiction will certainly enjoy this book.

Mother's Daze

My friend, Jane Isfeld Still’s “Mother’s Daze book was written to make every woman on the planet laugh--even in pregnancy when they feel like they are the size of a small apartment building and can’t see their feet. I was able to relate to this humorous book. I still remember during my last pregnancy how horrified I was when I couldn’t even see my own feet. I felt like an elephant.

This book was great and I found myself relating so many times to the stories told. I think most mothers’ will find themselves among these pages and will certainly enjoy a good laugh.

I’m sure that most of you will be looking for a gift really soon. I have a suggestion. On Mother’s Day, I honestly believe every woman deserves a good laugh, as well as some chocolate. Last night I attended Relief Society where we watched the movie, “Emma.” I had seen some of it before, but thoroughly enjoyed watching the entire story. The part that had the most impact on me was towards the end when Emma’s daughter, Julie, asked her mother if she could change something, what she would change. Her answer was – Me. I would change me.

What a great comment. Emma was certainly a wise woman, and a great example. No, she didn’t come west with the other Saints, but she had done what she had been sent to earth to do. She had sustained her husband through all his trials.

Wouldn’t it be great if each one of us changed ourselves before we tried to change someone else?

Illuminations Of The Heart

Illuminations of the Heart is a historical romantic novel by Joyce DiPastena

The will of Sirol de Calendri’s late brother directs her to go to the county of Poitou, France, where she enters the guardianship of her brother’s friend, Sir Triston de Brielle, who snatches her heart away with a kiss.

Triston carries guilt for the death of his late wife, Clothilde, and is hesitant to love again, especially since Siri looks like Clothilde. However, Siri does not act like Clothilde, because Sirol has a merry laugh and twinkling eyes.

Triston finds himself trapped between the rivalry of the king’s sons and a neighbor out for vengeance. Siri will not live in another woman’s shadow and refuses to let the man she loves cast her off.

I love the fact that Joyce tried to make this book as accurate as possible when including historical events. She even included a glossary of Medieval Terms at the back of the book. There is plenty of action, and it kept me on the edge of my seat many times. I would recommend this book to any of my friends. I know you won’t be disappointed. Illumination of the Heart is on the list of books nominated for a Whitney Award. It certainly has my vote.

This suspenseful story is amazing. Make sure you have plenty of time to read because once you start you won't want to stop. I promise you that this book will keep you turning pages right until the very end.

Many times, I've stopped to pick up someone because it was cold or I saw they had missed their bus and would have to wait outside in the frigid weather. This book will make me rethink my actions.

INTERVIEW with D. N. (Nichole) Giles - Author of Sharp Edge Of A Knife and co-author of the book Mormon Mishaps and Mischief

Q: How much research did you have to do to write Sharp Edge Of A Knife?

A: I started out with a handful of newspaper articles and about two pages worth of journal accounts from my grandpa, and somewhere in the mix there was a court subpoena. From there I called the police departments involved, but because the case was so old –fifty years–they referred me to the national archives in Denver. From there, I was able to get someone to help me track down the case and all the evidence and court documents. Interestingly, the knife used in the kidnapping, as well as some of the other evidence, is still there, and will remain there forever. Or at least, that’s what I’m told.

Q: What else did you do?

A: I did some more digging and tracked down one of the kidnappers. I wrote him a letter, asking him about the situation, and not really expecting a response. So, I was completely shocked when a week later this guy called me and talked to me on the phone for about an hour, telling me his side of things. He was very remorseful and teary. Very apologetic. It was probably the most profound conversation I’ve ever had.

Q: Is there anything else that no one has asked you, that you want to make sure everyone knows about your book?

A: If you look at the cover--really close--there are watermarked newspaper articles in the background. Those are the actual, real articles that I dug out of my grandma's basement in the beginning of my researching stage. Also, the full articles are printed on pages at the end of the book, including a real-life family picture.

Q: Was this an easy book to write or is it easier to just sit and let things come out of your head?

A: No, it was very difficult to write. You'd think that because I already knew what happened before I wrote it that it would be easier. But it wasn't. Because it's based on a true story, I felt so much more obligated to stick to facts and how things were, and how they happened for real--even if something seemed way off base to me. I think the hardest part was writing the beginning.

Q: Thinking about the writing that you have done, which has been the easiest? And which has been the hardest book to write?

A: There is no answer to that question, really, because there is no such thing as easy writing. And every project I've worked on has had different levels of difficulty and different challenges. My young adult fantasy is right now my biggest challenge, but only because I've rewritten it about 15 times. My other two books are already finished, so looking back, I don't always remember problems and issues that made me want to quit. But I will say that when it comes to producing the finished product, Mormon Mishaps and Mischief took the most dedication and work.

The Sharp Edge of a Knife is a completely different project from Mishaps, and from my YA book, and was so difficult when it came to research. I had to track down a kidnapper! And the court case is fifty years old. Even the national archives people were stumped for a while. So yes, there were definite challenges. But in the end, it was definitely worth it.

So there you have it. A non-answer. None was the easiest because there's no such thing. They've all been hard work and completely frustrating. And I loved working on all of them.

Cleansing of America

W. Cleon Skousen (1913-2006) was a popular teacher, lecturer, and author in the United States for over 40 years. He spent the majority of his life researching the gospel of Jesus Christ, the U.S. Constitution, the founding of America and writing several books and articles on the topics. He wrote this book in 1994 and it is now being published for the first time. It deals with what has caused our country to come to a state of moral degradation. Skousen discusses what both modern and ancient prophecy tells us will happen in the last days.

I’m fortunate to be one of those chosen to review and blog about this book prior to its release on April 1st. Included in the book are the events and stages the Lord has predicted, through his servants, and the winding-up scenes of this world. It helps the reader understand: the nature of prophecy, the known chronology of prophetic events, and the importance of staying close to the Lord and his prophets during the difficult and challenging years prior to the Second Coming. We are fast approaching those prophetic events. Some are upon us even now. Skousen points out that if we are prepared and obedient, we need not fear these events, but should embrace them for the blessings they will bring.

We all hope that we might someday qualify as a steward in a Zion society, but the probability is that not more than one out of ten of us will make it unless we undertake additional preparations. This is a powerful book, and one that I want to encourage all my family and friends to read. It has certainly changed my life and the way I think, and act.

One of my favorite parts was in the seventh chapter, “Developing Godly Qualities For A Zion Society.” One of my favorite founding fathers was John Adams who was familiar with the bible and knew what it would take to set up a country under God’s laws. He said:

“Suppose a nation in some distant region, should take the BIBLE for their ONLY law book, and every member should regulate his conduct by the precepts there exhibited.

“Every member would be obliged in conscience to temperance and frugality and industry, to justice and kindness and charity towards his fellow men, and to piety and love, and reverence towards almighty God.

“In this commonwealth, no man would impair his health by gluttony, drunkenness, or lust—no man would sacrifice his most precious time to cards, [TV?] or any other trifling and mean amusement—no man would steal or lie or [in] any way defraud his neighbor, but would live in peace and good will with all men—no man would blaspheme his Maker or profane his worship, but a rational and manly, a sincerely and unaffected piety and devotion, would reign in all hearts.

“What a paradise this would be.”

I agree with John Adams, and I honestly can’t even imagine what it would be like to live where this is possible. I wish I could trust people to not lie or steal from me. I would love to live in total peace.

This book has made me stop and think about the way I’m conducting my life. I know that I’m not good enough to live the law of consecration, but if I work hard, I think I can be ready. Included in the book is a long list of commandments that we all need to follow. If we follow the counsel given to us by our prophet, and other general authorities, as well as our local priesthood leaders, we will be guided in knowing how best to prepare for the days ahead.

When I find an author I trust who has written about the things I hold dear, such as the LDS gospel, the founding of America and the U.S. Constitution, I can hardly wait to read what they have to say. I loved this book from the first page until the very end. I wanted more and I’m glad that Valor Publishing has agreed to publish more of his books.

This book provided all the references, as well as discussion questions, at the end of each chapter. I’ll be glad to have my copy of this book nearby as a constant reminder of what I need to do to be ready. All that I can say is – this book is for everyone. You need to read it now, not next month or next year, but NOW!

Tribute

I would like to pay a special tribute to my parents - Robert Ellison and Elva Emily Koyle Smith. They have both passed on to live with their Heavenly Father. Today would have been their birthday. They shared the same birth date. My father was born five years before my mother and they chose to be married on their special day seventy-one years ago today.

These two people raised me in the LDS church and taught me to obey the commandments. They always taught me the difference between right and wrong. I was given many opportunities and they always looked out for my welfare. I could not have asked for more loving parents. These are the two people that I owe my life to, and I will cherish my memories of them for many years.

Am I Not a Man? The Dred Scott Story

I won this book last fall in a writing contest, Call For Freedom. The author is amazing and I enjoyed the book he wrote about a man who would not rest until he found justice and freedom in the courts. Although I’ve read many books about slaves, I had never studied about this man before. I strongly believe in his crusade for equal justice for all.

Mark made the characters come alive. I could almost see them as they walked in the cotton fields and rode riverboats on the Mississippi. Tears actually slid down my face as I read the account about the cold steel of the shackles closing around his wrists and ankles.

If I had to choose a section of the book that I liked best, it is Part XI – Once Free, Always Free. It covers the period from 1840 to 1850. The song – Am I Not a Man and Brother? - touched my heart and once again I shed some tears. Many people came forth and helped this man gain his freedom.

It’s sad that Dred didn’t live long enough to know that his courage led to the election of President Abraham Lincoln and the Emancipation Proclamation. This true story is one of courage, love, and friendship that eventually lead to freedom and equality for all men. If you love history as much as I do, you’ll enjoy this book.

Stranger

The Stranger She Married, is an excellent mystery and romance story. One by one, it seems that someone is out to kill Alicia’s entire family. One evening she escapes a fire, and another night kidnappers try to snatch her. This well written book, by Donna Hatch, will keep you turning pages to see what will happen next.

Although I thought this book was good, there are several bedroom scenes that some Latter-day Saints or others may find objectionable, and that I would have preferred she had left out of the book. Other than a few paragraphs this is a great book, and one that every mystery and romance reader will love.

LDS Ghost Story

I purchased the book, Haven Haunts, from the author, Joan Sowards, while I was in Arizona. It's about a young single woman, Callie Wilford, who inherits a century-old inn in southern Arizona. She doesn't believe there is a ghost although several people tell her that one guards the inn that she wants to turn into a bed and breakfast. She meets a handsome cowboy and a charming rancher, and soon finds her heart in danger.

This book captured my attention from the first page and held it until the very end. Joan has a unique way of combining the supernatural with suspense. There was plenty of mystery, and romance. Just when I thought I knew what would happen next, she did an amazing twist throwing me in a different direction. If you love a good mystery and romance this is the book for you.

ANWA Writers Conference

Last Saturday, in Mesa, Arizona, the keynote address, "What's Holding You Back?" given by J. Scott Savage. If I had only attended this one hour presentation, my trip there was worthwhile. I liked the idea that he focused on the positive as he told us to get rid of the I can't in our life, and to not compare ourself to others.

J. Scott Savage also gave a class presentation about getting an agent. I also enjoyed a presentation by Pamela Goodfellow who told us that a rejection is just a redirection. She challenge us all to convey to our reader what we mean. Another presentation I enjoyed was by Nancy Turner. She encouraged us to use all of our senses as we write. She also gave us several tips on editing our own books.

I was glad I took the time and spent the money to go to this writing conference. It was worthwhile to me.

My Son John

Not long ago I won a book, My Son, John - written by Kathi Macias. I finished it last night, and it was a quick read. I would recommend it to anyone that is struggling with a family member who has not always followed the path you would like.

When Liz Peterson’s mother is beaten to death in her home, Liz and her husband, Charles, struggle to make sense of the attack. The police arrest their son John for his grandmother’s murder. Their Christian faith is tested, and stretched to its limits. Can God’s grace bring healing to a family torn apart by a brutal crime?

Kathi Macias weaves an outstanding story about the worst kind of betrayal a mother can ever experience. This is a beautiful story about forgiveness and an unconditional love that surpasses understanding. Most readers will experience a roller coaster ride with their emotions of love, grief, mercy, doubt and faith as this family’s world is turned upside down.

The Undaunted – The Miracle of the Hole-in-the-Rock Pioneers

I just complete reading this book last night and decided I should post a review of what I thought about it.

This is a true story of a group of Mormon pioneers who undertook and completed what many thought was an impossible journey. This time, they were not running from persecution or trying to find a place where they would have religious freedom. Some of these people had a successful business, or a well-established farms, nice homes, and they were enjoying a good life. Why then did they leave? They believed that the call was from the Lord and it was necessary for the safety and good of the entire community. Each one of them thought it was the right thing to do.

After seeing what lie ahead with the Hole-in-the Rock, a former handcart pioneer, Jens Nielson said, “We must go through, even if we cannot.”

And, that is exactly what they did. There is plenty of adventure, romance, and sacrifices in these 800 pages. The pioneers sacrificed much to go on the San Juan Mission.

The Hole-in-the-Wall Pioneers had to face many problems. I enjoyed reading the details of each of the hardships they endured as they built a way through the Hole-in-the-Rock, blasted out perilous trails over slick rock and through desolate cliffs as they made their way through the Cottonwood Hill, Grey Mesa, The Chute, Slick Rock Hill, Clay Hill Pass, Salvation Knoll, and many others. Some of the cliffs were treacherous and difficult to get around. The slick red rocks and clay hills made it hard for the animals to get their footing, and still pull a wagon.

I agree with G. N. Lund. It is good to look to the past to gain appreciation for the present and perspective for the future. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes to read adventure stories along with romance.

New Contest

As most of you know, I love contests. I'm going to tell you about one - although I hate to do it - because if you enter it then it takes a chance away from me.

It's a contest to kick off the release of "Secret Sisters," the first installment in, "The Secret Sisters Mysteries."

Ida Mae Babbitt, president of the Omni 2nd ward Relief Society, didn't mean to become a spy. But when visiting teaching stats are low and she learns that one family under her care is in financial trouble, she'll do whatever it takes to make sure they have what they need. If that includes planting surveillance cameras in their home and watching them from a parked car in the woods, well, isn't that what any caring Relief Society president would do?

Mormon Mishaps

Today, I'm going to be a part of a blog tour for the humorous book, Mormon Mishaps & Mischief by D. N. Giles and C. L. Beck. At the end of my blog I will tell you how to win a $20 Gift Card to Barnes & Noble!

Tired of sitting, a bored little girl began fidgeting and acting up during sacrament meeting. Seeing a potential for disaster on the horizon, Mom picker her up, tucked the youngster under her arm- with the little girl’s head sticking out behind-and got up to leave. As they hurried down the aisle, the little girl’s impassioned plea to the congregation trailed behind, “Save me! Somebody please save me!”

At stake conference, a speaker told how one night his daughter didn’t want to stay in bed. He firmly told her she had better not get up. Soon, he and his wife heard the youngster asking for a snack. Her mother told her no and tucked the girl back into bed with another warning to stay there. She soon returned, holding a paperback Book of Mormon, and said, “But what about Mosiah 4:14?”
The speaker looked at the children in the congregation and said, “The scripture reads, ‘And ye will not suffer your children that they go hungry.’ I want you all to remember this scripture because you might need it someday.”
When the next speaker spoke, he said, “I want to do something similar. Will all the young women stand? When your dates pick you up, I want you to tell them this scripture. It is Mosiah 13:3, and it says: ‘Touch me not, for God shall smite you if ye lay your hands upon me.’”

I asked both of them to do an interview with me.

Question – What inspired you to put this book together?

Beck – I love humor. I love to hear people laugh, to say things that make them laugh (although I'm not very good at being a stand-up comedian) and because of that, I'm always ready to laugh. Which means when something funny happens in church, I'm one of those who gets the giggles. It seemed to me to be a shame for so much humor to take place in the LDS culture and for it to be lost once people moved onto the next event in life, so I started writing down the funny things I saw happening. And it's my hope that people's spirits get a lift when they read the stories.

Giles – I love to laugh, and it occurred to me at some point that Heavenly Father does too. It gave me a whole new outlook on church meetings or activities and why they can often be so enjoyable--spiritually, emotionally and physically. If your stomach aches when you get home, you know you've had a great time.

Question – Will there be a sequel?

Beck – Let's hope so, because I need to pay some bills. Oh, you didn't mean for that reason? Okay, well, I already have copious notes and I'm sure Nichole does, too. And we have about 20 stories already sent in by contributors, so that's all there is to it. There has to be a sequel.

Giles – We're ready to write one as soon as the publisher gives us the okay.

Question – I notice you each have several short stories in this book. How did you come up with so many humorous things?

Beck – Observation, my dear Watson. Or is it dear Sherlock? At any rate, my ward sacrament bulletin is usually scribbled full of notes by the time church is over on Sunday, because people do and say the funniest things. For example, the other day during Sacrament meeting, a mom sent her little girl to the bathroom to get some TP, probably to blow her nose. The next thing you know the little girl comes running down the aisle in the chapel, with a long ...
Well, I'll save the story for the sequel, and you can read about it then. (Sorry Connie, I know you hate not knowing the full story. :)

Giles – I either witnessed them all, or had close family members or friends who were party to the stories. The truth is, I have a tendency to find humor everywhere. The trick was figuring out how to share it.

Question – How long did it take you to put this all together?

Beck – Hmm, I hope Nichole's answer and mine match here. Maybe we should have put our heads together before answering this one, huh? I'd been collecting stories for some time, but once we decided to write Mishaps, it took about 6 months to get all the contributors stories edited, our stories written and edited, and the manuscript ready for submission. From there it took almost a year and a half or so ... but it felt like ten ... to go through the publishing process.

Giles – From the original idea, to writing proposals, accepting stories, putting the book together, editing and finally publication--about two years. However, now that we have it down, the next one shouldn't be nearly as long of a process. I hope. Thanks Connie, for the interview and for contributing so many stories to the book. This has been fun.

Two Writing Conferences in February

I’m excited about two writing conference during February. The first one, Life, The Universe & Everything, (free) takes place next week from Thursday, Feb 11th until Saturday, Feb 13th.

I’ve been the past two years, and I’m looking forward to next week. I won’t be able to go to everything, but from past experience, I know that I’ll gain some inspiration from attending, and I’ll be more enthusiastic about my writing. For some reason I need this motivation to keep me going during the blah winter months.

At the end of the month I’m real excited about the ANWA Writer’s Conference, that is being held at the Best Western Dobson Ranch Inn in Mesa, Arizona on Saturday, February 27 from 8 am until 5 pm.

I’m registered, have my airplane flight reserved as well as the room at the Inn. J Scott Savage is one of the speakers and from other times I’ve heard him speak, I know my time won’t be wasted. I’m counting the days.

A Holiday

Yeah, that's my excuse - I took a holiday. A day designated as having special significance for which individuals, a government, or a religious group have deemed that observation is warranted. It was a leave of absence. One that I decalred.

It wasn't a planned one and it wasn't any time off from work. The only reason I can give is - I was just plain lazy and didn't take the time to write anything to post here.

I wish I could say that I've been busy. That isn't even my excuse. I've actually been extremely lazy and didn't want to do anything more than was required. I probably spent more hours sitting in front of the television than I had in an entire year. Those who know me are aware I hate the TV. My favorite place to be is in front of my computer writing.

Does this mean I'm back? I hope so, but only time will tell.

I'm sorry that I've been neglecting my blog page. It's hard to blog when you are never near a computer long enough to get your thoughts flowing. I know it's a poor excuse, but my husband was in the hospital for six days and that really took a hunk of time out of each day. He is home, and doing fairly well.

My wish for the New Year for each of you, including myself, is a wonderful year full of great adventures, and lots of success in whatever you do. Good health the entire year for you and your entire family.

Important People – Part II

In my area many years ago, it was popular in the church to attend musical firesides with well-known artist. Most the youth and young single adults spent Sunday evenings traveling from one stake to another listening to the beautiful music, testimonies, and life experiences of these famous LDS singers. With my young teenagers, I attended many of these gatherings.

Through this and other experiences, I have met many important people. Some of them I met because I was in charge of finding people to speak at stake firesides. I worry about leaving some of them out because I haven’t always kept a great journal. Sometimes my life has been so busy I hardly had time to live it, and although I love writing, I didn’t always write about the things I was doing.

One of the most memorable firesides for the youth in our stake was the time they were able to perform with Michael Webb at his studio, in a play, Marvelous Light. We live on the west side of town and don’t always have all the updated equipment necessary to put on such a performance. Our lighting was bad and we had no microphones for such a production. Still this was going to be a fun experience. After all, Michael Webb was going to come and sing with them.

This was on April 18, 1993. Some of the young people had speaking parts, and some sang solos, or duets, or participated in a choir. For weeks, they attended all of the rehearsals. The stake president didn’t want me to take them out of the area to perform. It didn’t matter that some of their parents were driving them and I had permission slips signed by all of their parents. I thought I might lose my membership over this experience, but I fought tooth and nail for this once in a lifetime opportunity for them. I’m sure I don’t have to tell you that the performance was spectacular.

On October 20, 1996, Chris Heimberdinger, the author of the Tennis Shoes Adventure series as well as many other books for youth and adults spoke at a stake fireside. Besides being an impressive fireside speaker, he is also a remarkable teacher. I took a novel writing class from him in September 1998, and appreciate the fantastic help given to me in that class.

I was certainly surprised that a man as important as Michael Ballam, would consider coming to our stake. We were not disappointed as he told stories about his family, the gospel and shared his beautiful voice with us.

My stake was especially blessed the evening that we were fortunate enough to have Lloyd D. Newell of The Spoken Word speak to us on February 16, 1997. His life experiences and stories about the choir were great.

The artist, Chad Hawkins, came to our stake on March 16, 1997, to speak about his talent and show us some of his beautiful temple pictures with the hidden images. He began his series of temple artwork in 1989, at the age of seventeen, to support his eventual two-year mission in Frankfurt, Germany, for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. When he returned from his mission in 1993, he continued with his artwork. Since hearing him speak he has gone on to publish a book, The First 100 Temples. He has also done work for the governor, the legislature, and the University of Utah. I cherish the artwork in my home done by Chad Hawkins.

The list of people I’ve met goes on and on, but I know I’ll leave many of them out. Here is a short list – John Bytheway, Roger Hoffman, Janice Kapp Perry, Steven Kapp Perry, Joyce Quinn (actress in Legacy), Barbara Smith (former R.S. pres), Michael Stewart, Brenton Yorgason, and Margaret Young.

Important People - Part I

On my blog, I’ve decided to write about some of the wonderful people that I’ve met throughout my lifetime. Of course, the best ones are my family, and close friends.

Meeting important people is a big deal to some, but to me, they are just like me – ordinary people who did something extraordinary. Some left a bigger impression on me than others, by showing that it’s what you do, not what your name is that matters the most.

The first groups of people I want to mention are the leaders of the church I belong too.

As a young girl of about 10 years of age, I remember seeing a prophet up close for the first time, President George Albert Smith, the 8th prophet of the church.

He attended the funeral for my great-grandfather. They held the funeral in the Spanish Fork high school gymnasium. All of a sudden, I noticed a tall slender man with a short beard making his way to a seat near the front. Everyone in the audience started to stand, and I tugged on my mom’s arm and asked, “Why are all the people standing up?” She bent down and whispered, “That man is our prophet.”

Many years later, I met the apostle Spencer W. Kimball when he ordained my father a seventy. Years later after he was the prophet I again met him on several occasions. One year my husband and I attended a dinner/dance with my parents at Hotel Utah. We were sitting at a table in the ballroom when to our surprise and delight, President Kimball approached our table. He slapped my father on the back, and shook his hand. After my father made introductions, Present Kimball sat in an empty chair and quietly visited with my father for quite some time. My mom and I were once in a pioneer choir that traveled each Sunday during the summer to sing in sacrament meetings in the Salt Lake valley. One of the wards we sang in was the home ward of Thomas S. Monson. He was a friendly apostle and towered over both of us as we shook his hand. That was many years ago and it’s hard to imagine that he’s now our prophet.
To me the most memorable prophet was President Howard W. Hunter.I’ll always remember shaking his hand because as I looked into his eyes it seemed I was looking into the eyes of the Savior himself. President Hunter was so kind and a very soft-spoken man. Although he wasn’t a prophet for long, he was very dear to me.

On several occasions, I met President Hinckley and his dear wife,as well as President Faust. President Gordon B. Hinckley is the prophet that most everyone remembers the best because he led our church from 1995 until 2008, and during that time, the temple program grew rapidly under his leadership.

All of these men mean a lot to me. They were beloved by many and it’s been an honor to be in their presence. They didn’t just preach about being a Christian they showed us by their every day actions. They were extraordinary men.

Heather did a great job writing this story. She captured my interest and held it throughout the entire book. There is plenty of romance and mystery.

I cried with Denise and was upset because of the way she treated Rich, and her sister Paige. It gave me a good feeling to see Denise take charge of her own life and confront the emotional heartache from her troubled childhood. I was excited as she met new family members, but felt relief to see that she still stayed close to the parents who had raised her.

I recommend this book to all of you because I know you won’t be disappointed. You can purchase this book at Deseret Book, Seagull Book, or Barnes & Noble. It would make a great book for those in your life who love romance.

I'm A Winner Again

Wow - what a great way to start out the month of December. I already won a book from Heather Justesen, in the contest that I mentioned yesterday. It's really not to late for you to enter to win. I almost forgot to mention what I won - it is the book by Tristi Pinkston, Nothing to Regret.

National Novel Writing Month

I was one of thousands who accepted the challenge to write 50,000 words in one month. The month of November is the dreaded month. It is probably one of the busiest times of the year for most people. It was a goal that I accepted, and when I set out to do something I usually accomplish what I aim for.

Today, November 20th, at about 7 pm I reached my goal. It was a big relief and one I wasn't sure I would reach. I like to write, but never have I tried to fit so much writing time into my life before. Usually, I'm happy if I get a blog written and maybe 1,000 words in a day.

I could not have accomplished this without the encouragement and help from many people. My husband allowed me space and time to write whenever I wanted. I'm sure he was as relieved as I was went the goal was reached. My daugher Annette kept asking me how I was doing. Many friends asked how many words I had written, and encouraged me to keep going. The Authors Incognito group really made me push. I didn't want to be behind anyone, and so I pushed harder than I normally would have. It was great having so much support.

I'm happy to say that I'm done. I doubt that I'll ever try this again, but now I know I can do it.

The LDS Humor committee just announced that, Mormon Mishaps and Mischief is going to press. They told us to expect it to be available in the stores around the second week of December.

So why am I telling you this? Because my name will be in print in an actual book. They told those of us that wrote short blurbs that we could announce this happy news on our blogs, Facebook, Twitter, and any other social networking site or place where we feel it's appropriate. I can announce to the world that I’m going to be published. They also encouraged us to point out what a great holiday gift this little book would make. Everyone wants a smile for Christmas. I’m going to buy several.

Missing

One of the best books I’ve read this year is, Missing by Ronda Gibb Hinrichsen. Even though I had read the beginning of this book, I needed to see what happened next, and then it was difficult to put down. After each chapter, I had to keep going. This story kept my attention until the very end. Yes, I would buy this book for my teenage granddaughters and other people on my Christmas list.

During a musical performance, Stacie saw a kidnapped child in the audience, but the girl disappears. Stacie had the courage to pursue the child even when no one except a handsome Matt believed her. He helps her in the search, while she tries to resist the attraction she feels for him. Stacie puts her own life on the line to find this child and bring her to safety. Even though Stacie faced many difficult trials in her life, she still listened to the whisperings within her own heart. The characters in the book were real and I could picture each scene. I would recommend this book to everyone who likes a good mystery and romance. This is an amazing book, and I give it a big 10.

Standing Up for Freedom

Most people desire to be free from fear or want, and they wish for freedom of speech and belief. To me freedom means a person has the ability to act according to his or her own will. It also suggests that I can stand up for liberty. The fight between good and evil on earth will never end, but here in the United States of America I have the right for freedom.

The war between good and evil started in our pre-existence, our life with God before we were born. The scriptures are full of events concerning noble, righteous deeds. There are also many examples of wicked, malicious men, as well as decent, respectable men. My hero is Moroni, a strong and mighty man in the Book of Mormon, who rallied his people to defend their religion. He sought after the glory of God, and the welfare of his country. Moroni stood up and fought for liberty and the freedom of his country.

In 1626, some of my courageous ancestors boarded the Mayflower and left the old world behind for a new land where they could worship God after the dictates of their own hearts. A hundred-fifty years later, their children fought for freedom in the Revolutionary War. What they did for us was not without cost. Thousands of people gave their lives for this country because they wanted the right to choose. It is my belief that you are only free if you have choices. Those people didn't want a king. Instead, they wanted new laws. Just like Moroni, they wanted liberty.

It makes me angry to see so many people sit back and take what they have for granted. It's almost as though they don't want independence. Maybe they are afraid of liberty, because having freedom means responsibility. Many people fail to vote, and they don't take an interest in their community or the things going on around them. They only live life for what it can do for them, giving little of themselves or their time. I believe that everyone owes it to those in upcoming generations to give back something so that freedom carries on to the next generation.

I'm grateful for the privilege of citizenship in this great country. Here I have the power to make decisions without constraint. Because of my ancestors and millions of other people, I can and do vote for those leaders that I feel will lead our country down the correct path so that everyone living in the United States has the right for freedom.
